Photographer Jon Holderer to “Shoot” Traverse City
for New Michigan Photo Contest
TRAVERSE CITY –New York photographer Jon Holderer will be snapping pictures in the Traverse City area this spring to compete in the state’s new Pure Michigan Photo Contest.
Holderer is one of ten photographers who’ll be prowling the state between March 1 and June 30 looking for the best subjects for their work. The ten contestants, selected from a field of nearly 40, will compete for a $5,000 cash prize; each has been partnered with a local Convention and Visitors Bureau and assigned to work in that particular area.
The competition is designed to provide new scenic images for future state tourism promotion campaigns, said George Zimmermann, vice president of Travel Michigan, the state tourism authority. “The Pure Michigan photo contest is a great way for people around the world to share their Michigan travel experiences,” he added.
Holderer has been based in New York City for more than 20 years, and his commercial clients have included Kodak, Macy's, NBC, Citibank, L. L. Bean, and Seagrams. He also shot many Broadway show posters, A New Jersey native, he was apprenticed at age 18 to Steve Steigman (famous for his Maxell ads) and was able to work on some of the biggest ad campaigns of the time. At 25, he opened his own studio, specializing in still life and tabletop photography. He is no stranger to the Traverse City area, and many of his landscapes are of the Sleeping Bear Dunes.
“I can’t wait to get up there,” he said. “Those dunes are fantastic. I show people photos from there, and they can’t believe it’s Michigan.”
Images taken during the competition will be showcased in an annual book, Pure Michigan-Scenic Places and online at www.puremichiganphotocontest.com
