TC welcomes cruise ship M/V Columbus
TRAVERSE CITY WELCOMES CRUISE SHIP M/V COLUMBUS FRIDAY, OCT. 13
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
10 OCTOBER 2006
TRAVERSE CITY – The great white liner M/V Columbus returns to Grand Traverse Bay this week, and the city is looking to provide a warm welcome.
Mayor Linda Smyka, together with volunteers and staff from the Traverse City Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Downtown Traverse City Association, will be on hand when the ship’s passenger shuttle arrives at the Great Lakes Maritime Academy dock late Friday morning. They’ll greet disembarking passengers, offer directions and assistance and provide them with information about shopping and other attractions during their afternoon stay. The Convention & Visitors Bureau delivered copies of its 2006 Traverse City Area Guide to the ship before it left Chicago so passengers could familiarize themselves with the area’s attractions.
“A lot of people first discover places where they’d like to vacation when they’re on a cruise,” said Bureau President Brad Van Dommelen. “Welcoming them is a way to encourage them to come back and spend more than just a few hours with us.”
The Columbus, one of several cruise ships operating in the Great lakes, is a familiar visitor to Traverse City but is only making one stop here this season, during an Oct. 11-21 color cruise from Chicago to Toronto. Ninety percent of the 354 passengers on this particular cruise are German nationals, with a smattering of Australians and Americans. Some will be taking advantage of a land excursion to the Sleeping Bear Dunes, while others will simply enjoy the sights and sounds of Traverse City.
